Mangaluru is grappling with a surge in potholes on highways, posing significant risks to motorists and leading to numerous accidents amidst heavy monsoon rains. The public has voiced frustration over navigating roads filled with potholes, criticizing the apparent inaction of authorities in preemptively addressing the issue before the onset of monsoon.
Instances of accidents due to potholes, such as a recent incident in Surathkal where a motorist lost balance on a two-wheeler, have underscored the urgency of addressing road maintenance. Potholes, particularly at critical junctions like KPT Circle, have further exacerbated safety concerns for vehicular movement.
In a commendable gesture, Traffic Policeman Eshwar Swamy from the east traffic police station took matters into his own hands by personally filling potholes at KPT Circle. Assisted by contributions from traffic staff and auto-rickshaw drivers, Swamy’s initiative aimed to mitigate the immediate dangers posed by these road hazards.
Despite such efforts, questions have arisen regarding the primary responsibility for maintaining road safety. While Swamy’s actions were appreciated for easing traffic and protecting motorists, netizens have raised valid concerns about whether it should fall upon traffic policemen or the relevant authorities to ensure timely repair and maintenance of roads.
The situation has highlighted a broader issue of infrastructure management and public safety, urging authorities to adopt proactive measures to prevent accidents caused by neglected road conditions.
