Mangaluru: In a decisive move to improve road safety and enforce traffic laws, Mangaluru city police conducted a joint operation on June 2 and 3, targeting vehicles using tinted windows and black films—a violation under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Teams from the traffic and law & order departments carried out inspections across the Mangaluru Commissionerate limits. The drive led to 223 cases being booked against violators, and fines totaling ₹1,11,500 were imposed.

Along with penalties, the police physically removed illegal films and stickers from windows and windshields of the offending vehicles. Offenders were cautioned, and awareness was raised on the legal restrictions and their implications for public safety.

Taking the campaign further, a meeting was held on June 3 at the Commissioner’s office involving car showroom owners, garages, accessory stores, and sticker vendors. These stakeholders were briefed on the Supreme Court’s ban on any form of aftermarket tinting, which could be misused for criminal or anti-social activities.

Shop owners were strictly instructed not to provide or install tinted films, regardless of customer requests.

Police have confirmed that the enforcement drive will continue in the days ahead to ensure stricter compliance and promote safer roads in the city.
