On Wednesday, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP recognized the humanitarian efforts of Mangaluru journalists who assisted in the funeral rites of Sanni Hanumanth Gowda, an elderly woman who died in a Shirur landslide. Gowda’s body was discovered on Tuesday, eight days after the tragic landslide in Uluware village.
Journalists Shashi Bellayaru, Mohan Kuttar, Arif UR., Girish Malali, and Shivashankar played a crucial role in transporting Gowda’s body to her home for the final rites after the postmortem. Their efforts were brought to light through media reports, prompting the Deputy Commissioner to invite them to his office for a formal recognition ceremony. The event was coordinated with input from Srinivas Nayak Indaje, president of the DK Working Journalists’ Association.
During the ceremony, DC Mullai Muhilan praised the journalists for their commendable actions, stating, “This is a proud moment for Dakshina Kannada district. Continue to engage in such social work. If you need any support, the district administration is with you. Society needs enthusiastic young people like you.”
The Deputy Commissioner also took the opportunity to gather information from the journalists regarding the current situation in Shirur and Uluware villages, ensuring the administration remains informed about ongoing challenges in the affected areas.
Senior assistant director of the Dakshina Kannada district information and public relations department Khader Shah, Ullal Taluk Working Journalists’ Association president Vasanth N Konaje, and Ganesh Talapadi were also present at the ceremony.
