The Dakshina Kannada district administration has declared a holiday for all Anganwadi centres, primary, and secondary schools on Monday, August 18, following a red alert issued for coastal Karnataka. The order, announced by Deputy Commissioner Darshan, places student and staff safety as the top priority amid forecasts of heavy rain and adverse weather.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of intense downpours, strong winds, and possible flooding across the region. With low-lying areas at risk and normal life expected to be disrupted, authorities have urged residents to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take necessary safety measures.
Officials have also alerted disaster management teams, with emphasis on ensuring rapid response in case of emergencies such as waterlogging, tree falls, or landslides. Fishermen have been strictly advised against venturing into the sea due to turbulent conditions.
Local authorities have appealed to parents and guardians to ensure children stay safe at home. Schools and Anganwadi staff have also been directed to remain on standby for further instructions depending on how the weather situation evolves.
The precautionary closure comes in line with standard safety protocols, with the administration reiterating that safeguarding lives is more important than routine operations. DC Darshan emphasized that public cooperation is crucial in minimising risks during extreme weather events.
With forecasts indicating continued heavy rainfall, residents are urged to monitor official updates closely and follow all advisories issued by the administration.
