Dalit Leaders Urge Police Action to Address Atrocities and Community Issues
Dalit leaders in Mangaluru have called on senior police officials to direct station-level officers to review cases filed under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, ensuring that justice is served for victims. The leaders accused police of not conducting thorough investigations in many Dalit atrocity cases, and failing to take appropriate action. The issue was raised by Dalit leader Devadas M during the SC/ST grievances redressal meeting at the City Police Commissioner’s office on Sunday. Devadas expressed concern that, despite the existence of the Act, investigations often lack thoroughness.
Sidharth Goyal, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order), responded, stating that officers of the ACP grade were handling cases of atrocities against Dalits. He explained that both sides of the case were being heard before any action was initiated and that any lapses would be reported to senior officials.
Girish Kumar, another Dalit leader, raised the issue of the Kotekar Vyavasaya Seva Sahakari Sangha, a site where a robbery had occurred. He pointed out the lack of proper security measures such as CCTV surveillance, a siren system, and a security guard, demanding that a case be registered against the society for neglecting security. The DCP assured that the police took the robbery seriously, arrested suspects, and recovered stolen property. He also noted that after the incident, Police Commissioner Anupam Agrwal held meetings with microfinance institutions and banks to improve security measures.
Kumar also raised concerns about the illegal sand mining and matka gambling activities that were allegedly flourishing in Ullal. Dalit leader SP Anand brought up the health risks faced by around 15 Koraga families living near a waste disposal unit. Despite lodging complaints with the deputy commissioner and the zilla panchayat CEO, no solution had been found, he stated. Additionally, Anand requested action against microfinance institutions that were reportedly charging exorbitant interest rates and harassing borrowers for repayment.
The issues raised at the meeting highlight ongoing concerns within the Dalit community, and the leaders are urging swift action to address these challenges and ensure justice for all affected.
