Mangaluru – Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan has instructed all gram panchayats and urban local bodies to identify and report locations within their jurisdiction that are vulnerable to natural disasters within the next 48 hours.

Chairing the District Disaster Management Authority meeting at his office on Tuesday, DC Muhilan stressed the need to proactively map areas at risk of landslides, floods, and heavy rain-induced incidents. He emphasized that residents in such locations must be relocated during red alert periods and should be officially warned of the potential dangers in advance.

He issued a clear warning: if any incident occurs in a zone not marked as vulnerable, the respective local body officials will be held accountable for negligence.

“Protecting lives during calamities is our foremost responsibility,” the DC said, urging authorities to conduct on-ground inspections in every part of their jurisdiction, especially in densely inhabited and sensitive areas.

The DC also highlighted that tampering with natural water flow can increase disaster risk, and such activities must be avoided.

Raising concern over water runoff from Mangaluru airport affecting nearby homes, he ordered airport authorities to file a report by Wednesday afternoon. Non-compliance, he warned, would invite action under the Disaster Management Act.

He also criticized the delay in landslide control measures at Kettikal. Responding to this, NHAI officials confirmed that central approval has been secured and the project will commence soon.
