Mangaluru: With the arrival of the monsoon and a rise in suspected dengue cases across rural Dakshina Kannada, the health department has intensified surveillance and response efforts, according to District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. H R Thimmaiah.

So far in 2024, 43 confirmed cases have been recorded, with over 10 cases reported in May alone—mainly from Belthangady, Puttur, and Sullia. In response, the department will launch fever case surveys, inspecting 50 houses near each index case, and will carry out mosquito source reduction drives through August.

Special teams comprising health workers, medical college staff, and hospital personnel will be formed to assist in this campaign.

Historical data shows a steady rise in dengue:

  • 2021 – 295 cases and 1 death

  • 2022 – 388 cases

  • 2023 – 566 cases

  • 2024 – 534 cases (till date)
The Mangaluru taluk continues to report the highest number of infections.

  • The DHO issued a special advisory to arecanut and rubber plantation owners, urging them to eliminate stagnant water, a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Households are advised to empty and clean water containers weekly, and support larva inspections by health workers.

While 90% of dengue patients recover without medication, rest and hydration are critical. Dr. Thimmaiah warned against self-medication, especially due to the risk of lowering platelet counts, which can worsen the condition.
