Mangaluru: Noted actor, director and playwright Devadas Kapikad announced that a dedicated theatre training centre will be established in Mangaluru next year, marking a significant step in nurturing performing arts in the region. He made this announcement after receiving the Guest of Honour recognition at the Mangaluru Press Club on Tuesday.
Theatre training centre to begin next year
Kapikad said that the idea to set up the centre was conceived five years ago, but the Covid-19 pandemic delayed its implementation. “Even today, Mangaluru does not have a proper theatre auditorium, and artistes rely on Town Hall for performances. The new centre will address this long-pending need,” he said.
Changing landscape of theatre
Reflecting on the evolution of the theatre scene, Kapikad recalled a time when playwrights and artistes were looked down upon. “When I began my career, there was no supportive environment. Whatever I achieved was through hard work. Today, theatre enjoys respect and recognition in society,” he observed.
He highlighted the growing participation of women in theatre, noting that earlier, men had to take up female roles. “Now, women themselves come forward to perform, which enriches the art form,” he added.
Music and creative opportunities
Kapikad emphasised the increasing scope for music in the entertainment industry. “I have composed music for three films. Students should take interest in learning music and develop expertise alongside their formal education,” he said.
He also commended the theatre community of Dakshina Kannada district for its unity and cooperation, which he said has helped the art form thrive without rivalry.
A journey of struggle and success
Kapikad shared his personal journey, recalling how poverty and family hardships shaped his determination. His early interest in drama, singing and comedy was nurtured by his teachers, and his admission to Government College, Mangaluru, provided a platform for his artistic growth.
Through his theatre troupe ‘Cha Parka,’ he staged a series of successful comedy plays, with his latest production Ennane Kathe marking the troupe’s 60th play.
