Digital Transformation Of Private Buses In Dakshina Kannada

In a move towards modernization, private buses in Dakshina Kannada are set to undergo a digital transformation in stages. The Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners Association has announced plans to implement UPI payment options in all their vehicles, allowing passengers to pay for their tickets online while on board. While private buses are being equipped with GPS systems, the integration of UPI payments will further enhance the convenience of bus travel in the region.

Private bus operators have already taken a step towards digitization by introducing the Chalo App, which provides significant discounts to commuters. Association president Azeez Parthipady said that the bus owners have been offering a 60% discount on ticket fares to students through the Chalo Cards. “We are hopeful of more passengers opting for digital payment if UPI transactions are also allowed in buses,” he said. Chalo Cards are distributed free of cost to students, while others have to pay a nominal amount to get the card, which has 40 days of validity. The passes can be availed from the association office at Milagres building in Hampankatta, Chalo office in City Light building on Balmatta Road, Sagar Tourist in Balmatta, Sai Mobile in Surathkal, and Anu Mobile Shop in Thokkottu. Students should produce the identity cards issued by their educational institutions or a receipt of payment of fees from educational institutions to avail of bus passes.

“All drivers have been asked to be careful while driving during the monsoon to ensure the safety of passengers, including children. We are also avoiding the use of shrill horns and music on buses. When there is an increase in the density of vehicles, the speed of the buses automatically reduces. Doors will be fixed to all buses in a phased manner,” he said, adding that the association will give priority to the safety of passengers.
