Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District In-Charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has announced the creation of a structured, district-level mechanism to combat drug abuse and trafficking, placing strong emphasis on institutional cooperation and faster legal procedures.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday after a high-level review with senior police and district officials, Rao stressed the urgency for proactive involvement of educational institutions. “Some colleges hesitate to take strict steps on drug issues out of concern for their reputation,” he noted. “But drug abuse is a social crisis, and educational institutes must act responsibly.”

To mobilise action, a district-wide meeting with college representatives is planned for June 26, aligning with World Anti-Drugs Day. The initiative aims to foster public-oriented collaboration to treat drug use as a shared societal issue.

The minister further stated that anti-drug cells will be reactivated in every college, each managed by a designated nodal officer. He highlighted the pivotal role of teachers in observing student behaviour and offering early support.

To address procedural delays in drug cases, Rao announced efforts to establish a drug testing lab in Mangaluru, reducing reliance on Bengaluru’s facilities and speeding up investigations and trials.

He also reviewed issues around laterite and sand mining, directing officials to align laterite stone pricing with neighbouring states to boost local industry.

On the NHRC probe into police action against Hindutva activists, Rao clarified there was no malicious intent. “The police must act freely to maintain law and order,” he stated.
