Doctors at Wenlock Hospital Save 12-Year-Old with Complex Surgery

Mangaluru: A team of doctors from Wenlock District Hospital, led by Dr. Suresh Pai, successfully performed a high-risk surgery, removing a 20 cm-long wooden piece from a 12-year-old boy’s chest.

The boy, Kamal Hussain, suffered the injury when a coconut branch fell on him, causing a sharp wooden fragment to pierce his neck and lodge deep in his chest. The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) team conducted the life-saving operation early Sunday morning.

Hussain’s family had migrated from Guwahati, Assam, to Akathur in Madikeri, where they had been working on a coffee plantation for the past two years. The accident occurred around 6:30 PM while he was bathing outdoors. His family, with the plantation owner’s help, rushed him to a local hospital in Madikeri. Doctors there advised immediate transfer to Mangaluru for advanced care. He arrived at Wenlock Hospital at 12:15 AM, and surgery commenced at 1:30 AM, lasting until 3:30 AM.

Post-surgery, the boy is reportedly in stable condition. His elder brother, Tasar Ali, expressed gratitude to the doctors, stating that the surgery was performed free of cost.

District Surgeon Dr. D S Shivaprakash commended the CTVS, anesthesia, and OT teams for their expertise and dedication. “It was a delicate procedure since major blood vessels remained intact. However, removing a deeply embedded foreign object carries significant risk, including severe bleeding,” he explained.

The successful operation stands as a testament to medical excellence at Wenlock Hospital.
