Mangaluru: In a remarkable medical breakthrough, doctors at Fr. Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru, successfully performed a rare and complex coronary angioplasty using cutting-edge technology, saving the life of a critically ill 46-year-old woman from Kasaragod district, Kerala.
The patient was admitted with severe breathing difficulty, fatigue, and weakness that significantly restricted her daily activities. Upon detailed clinical examination, she was diagnosed with Takayasu disease, a rare condition that had led to blockage in both major arteries supplying blood to the heart, severely compromising cardiac function.
Rare condition posed high surgical risk
Given the complexity of the case and the patient’s fragile condition, conventional surgical options carried extremely high risk. The medical team had to carefully evaluate alternative approaches to ensure a safe and effective intervention.
The patient’s condition required immediate attention, as delayed treatment could have led to life-threatening complications. The rarity of the disease and the extent of arterial blockage made the case particularly challenging.
Expert team undertakes complex procedure
The case was led by Dr. H. Prabhakar, Chief Interventional Cardiologist, who promptly initiated emergency treatment. He was supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising cardiologists Dr. Pradeep Pereira, Dr. Jostal Pinto, and Dr. Ashoka.
The team meticulously planned and executed a complex coronary angioplasty using advanced imaging techniques and specialised cutting balloon technology. This minimally invasive approach allowed precise treatment of the blocked arteries while reducing procedural risks.
Due to the patient’s critical condition, the procedure was carried out in two stages over separate days to ensure stability and effectiveness.
Cutting-edge technology ensures success
The use of advanced imaging and cutting balloon technology played a crucial role in restoring normal blood flow to the heart. This innovative approach enabled the doctors to treat a highly complex case with greater precision and safety.
The successful outcome of the procedure marks a significant milestone in cardiac care, demonstrating the capability of regional healthcare institutions to handle rare and high-risk cases using modern medical advancements.
Patient recovers and resumes normal life
Following the procedure, the patient showed remarkable improvement and responded well to treatment. After careful post-operative monitoring, she made a full recovery and was discharged from the hospital.
She is now leading a healthy and normal life, highlighting the effectiveness of timely intervention and advanced medical care.
Doctors highlight role of technology
Speaking about the achievement, Dr. H. Prabhakar emphasised that advancements in medical technology have enabled doctors to treat high-risk patients with improved precision and safety.
The case underscores the importance of adopting innovative techniques in managing complex cardiac conditions and improving patient outcomes.
Institution commends medical team
Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director of Father Muller Institutions, congratulated the medical team for their exemplary work and dedication. He appreciated their efforts in successfully handling such a rare and challenging case.
A milestone in cardiac care
This successful procedure represents a major advancement in cardiac treatment in Mangaluru, reinforcing the region’s growing reputation in specialised healthcare services.
The achievement not only saved a life but also set a benchmark for future interventions involving complex cardiac conditions, offering hope to patients with similar health challenges.
