Eco Clubs In Govt Schools To Receive Funding For Environmental Activities

In a bid to promote environmental awareness, the department of school education and literacy has approved funds for government schools in Dakshina Kannada district to restart eco-club activities. After a two-year gap, schools will receive funding under the Samagra Shikshana Karnataka programme, with a total of Rs 50.2 lakh allocated for the 2024–25 academic year.

According to the breakdown, Rs 4.7 lakh has been set aside for 238 lower primary schools, Rs 32.5 lakh for 651 higher primary schools, and Rs 12.9 lakh for 173 high schools. The funds will primarily support waste management initiatives, with schools instructed to purchase red and blue bins to separate wet and dry waste.

Venkatesha Subraya Patagara, deputy director of public instruction (DDPI), emphasized that eco-clubs will also focus on activities like planting trees, creating vegetable gardens, and conducting nature walks. Schools have been directed to implement these programs before the academic year concludes.

Teachers shared that the absence of funding over the past two years hindered many eco-club activities, including vegetable gardens used for midday meals. The renewed funding has revived hope for these initiatives, allowing students to reconnect with nature.
