A year after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced insurance for gig workers, the family of Arjun Poojar, a 21-year-old delivery boy from Mangaluru, received Rs 4 lakh after his tragic death in a road accident. Arjun had enrolled in the Karnataka State Gig Workers Insurance scheme just 10 days before the accident.

Arjun, who joined a food-delivery platform in 2023, was delivering an order on February 24 when his motorbike was hit by a car on KSRTC-Kuntikana Road. Despite being rushed to a private hospital and later transferred to Wenlock District Hospital and another facility for advanced treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on February 26.

After his death, Arjun’s father, Madigappa Poojar, applied for the insurance benefit. On September 19, Labour Minister Santosh Lad handed over the Rs 4 lakh cheque to the family, marking the first recorded claim payout under the Karnataka State Gig Workers Insurance Scheme.
