Fishing Ban from June 1: 61-Day Moratorium Along DK Coast
Mangaluru: The annual fishing ban along the Dakshina Kannada coastline will be in effect from June 1 to July 31, spanning a total of 61 days, inclusive of both start and end dates.
During this period, all mechanized fishing vessels and motorized boats above 10 horsepower are strictly prohibited from conducting fishing operations. The restriction also applies to traditional boats using any form of fishing gear or equipment.
However, traditional and country boats equipped with engines below 10 HP are permitted to carry out limited coastal fishing, primarily for transportation purposes.
This seasonal fishing ban is implemented in the interest of marine conservation and to allow fish breeding and replenishment of resources. The restriction plays a crucial role in protecting the livelihoods of fishermen in the long term.
The Joint Director of Fisheries emphasized that violators of the ban will face strict action, including a one-year prohibition on the sale of fish within the state. Such violations will also attract penalties under the Karnataka Marine Fisheries (Regulation) Act, 1986.
Fishermen are urged to support and comply with the directive, which is framed to protect the sustainability of marine life and ensure fairness to all those dependent on fishing in the region.
