The Additional District and Sessions Court – FTSC-II (Pocso) Judge Maanu K S has convicted five individuals in a child marriage case under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. Each convicted person has been sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined a total of Rs 35,000.
The convicted individuals are Mahammad Imtiyaz (29), the husband of the minor girl from Montepadav, Ullal; Abdul Khader (41) and Ramlath (43), the girl’s parents from Ramalkatte, Bantwal; and K I Mohammed and Maimuna, the parents of Imtiyaz, also from Montepadav.
Special public prosecutor Badrinath Nairi shared that Mahammad Imtiyaz married the 17-year-old girl on May 31, 2023, with the approval and support of both families. The marriage reception took place on June 1 at a hall in Kairangala, Ullal.
An FIR was filed at the Women’s Police Station following a complaint from an officer of the Department of Women and Child Development, which highlighted the illegal marriage of a minor under section 6 of the Pocso Act and Sections 8, 10, and 11 of the Child Marriage Act. Inspector Rajendra B led the investigation and filed the chargesheet. The court examined 10 witnesses and reviewed 22 documents before delivering its verdict.
