Mangaluru: Five persons sustained serious injuries after a car travelling from Bengaluru towards Udupi reportedly skidded, crashed into a fruit-laden mini goods tempo and overturned on the national highway near Kolnadu on Tuesday, August 25.

The injured have been identified as Sampath Shetty (69), Mamata Shetty, Sumitra (28), mini goods tempo driver Basheer (42) and Asif (23).

According to the available information, three of the injured were travelling in the car, while two were in the mini goods tempo carrying fruits. The accident occurred when the car reached Kolnadu, where the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.

The car allegedly skidded before crashing into the mini goods tempo with considerable force. Following the collision, the car overturned and was thrown into a roadside drain.

Tempo badly damaged in collision

The impact of the crash caused extensive damage to the fruit-laden mini goods tempo. The upper portion of the vehicle was ripped off due to the force of the collision and landed on the highway divider.

The accident scene drew the attention of local residents, who rushed to help those injured in the crash.

The occupants of the car were trapped inside after the vehicle overturned and fell into the roadside drain. Local residents immediately launched rescue efforts and helped bring the injured persons out of the damaged car.

An ambulance was arranged to shift all the injured persons to hospital for treatment. Their condition was reported to be serious.

Local residents carry out rescue

Residents in the area played a key role in rescuing the injured occupants soon after the accident. The damaged condition of the car made the rescue operation difficult, as the occupants were trapped inside the overturned vehicle.

After being rescued, the injured were provided immediate assistance and shifted to hospital in an ambulance for further medical care.

The mini goods tempo also suffered severe damage in the accident. The collision affected the flow of traffic on the busy national highway, with vehicles slowing down and congestion reported near the accident spot.

Traffic remained disrupted for some time as the damaged vehicles had to be removed from the road and the accident site cleared.

Car removed using crane

The overturned car was later removed from the roadside drain with the help of a crane. The clearance operation helped restore the movement of vehicles on the national highway.

The accident resulted in major damage to both vehicles and caused a temporary disruption to highway traffic.

Further details regarding the accident were awaited. The incident once again highlights the risks of losing control of a vehicle on busy highway stretches, where even a brief loss of control can result in a serious collision.
