Transformative expansions at Father Muller Charitable Institutions
Mangaluru, 17 June 2025: In a milestone event reflecting its commitment to healthcare and academic growth, the Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) inaugurated three significant new facilities. These include a state-of-the-art Ophthalmology Operation Theatre and Ward, an upgraded Departmental Block for the College of Speech and Hearing, and a newly installed Domestic Lift aimed at enhancing patient care and institutional operations.
The blessing and inauguration ceremony was led by Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director of FMCI, who emphasised the institution’s founding vision and commitment to serve humanity through both healing and knowledge.
Advanced surgical and clinical infrastructure
The new Ophthalmology OT and General Ward, located above the Outpatient Department, stands as a model of precision engineering and futuristic design. The vertical expansion was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the FMCI Management Committee, architects, and engineers. The facility aims to provide cutting-edge surgical care while maintaining comfort and dignity for patients.
Academic infrastructure upgrade
A key highlight of the inauguration was the opening of the expanded Departmental Block of Father Muller College (Speech and Hearing). The second floor now houses Speech and Language classrooms, while the third floor accommodates Audiology departments. These additions were driven by increasing clinical OPD numbers and the need for a conducive academic environment.
With dedicated departmental spaces, seminar halls, and HOD cabins, the new block strengthens FMCI’s role as a centre of academic excellence in the region.
Enhancing mobility and accessibility
FMCI also introduced a Domestic Lift, adjacent to the administrative area. Reserved for management and administrative staff, this lift reduces congestion and reserves the main lift exclusively for patients, particularly those using wheelchairs. This move reflects FMCI’s patient-centric approach to facility planning.

A tribute to visionary leadership
In his address, Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho stated, “Every brick laid and every facility built is a tribute to the vision of our Founder, Rev. Fr Augustus Muller SJ.” He acknowledged the roles of Fr Ajith B Menezes, Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, and former administrators Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Souza and Fr Nelson Pais in making these projects a reality.
Fr Ajith B Menezes, who compered the programme, highlighted numerous developments under Fr Richard’s leadership — including the Convention Centre, Indoor Stadium, Asha Kiran Block, the Fathima and Sacred Heart Wards, and vertical expansion of the Utility Building. He noted that the steel-clad operation theatres, renovated ICUs, and modern diagnostic units are a testament to the Director’s vision.
State-of-the-art medical equipment
The inauguration also celebrated FMCI’s continued investment in advanced technology. Notable equipment additions include:
-
High-end orthopaedic surgical microscopes
Advanced laparoscopic units for General Surgery and OBG
1.5T and 3T MRI machines
High-resolution fetal sonography systems

These tools aim to improve clinical outcomes, not only in numbers but in quality of life for patients.

Among those thanked were architects, electricians, OT suppliers, fire safety engineers, interior designers, and more.
