A man from the city lost lakhs of rupees from his bank account after downloading an APK file sent via WhatsApp. The victim has filed an FIR at the Central Crime Station.
On Sunday, November 24, the victim received a message from an unknown number, accompanied by an APK file titled “vahan.parivahan.apk,” claiming to provide information on traffic rule violations. After downloading the file, the victim began receiving 16 OTPs (One Time Passwords). He clarified that he did not share the OTPs with anyone. Shortly after, unauthorized transactions appeared on his credit and debit cards.
The victim reported that Rs 30,400 was charged to his credit card for purchases on Flipkart and Amazon, while Rs 16,700 was deducted from his debit card. An additional Rs 71,496 was charged via a Pay Later service. Despite blocking both cards, the fraudsters continued using his Axis Bank account. They made several purchases, including a Rs 39,398 OnePlus mobile, a Rs 32,098 Motorola mobile, Rs 12,800 worth of AirPods, and Flipkart vouchers worth Rs 14,700 and Rs 29,000, along with a Rs 3,000 Amazon gift voucher. All purchases were made using a New Delhi address, totaling Rs 1,31,396 in fraudulent charges.
The police are investigating the case based on the victim’s complaint.
