Mangaluru: In an effort to curb pedestrian fatalities and reduce accidents along the National Highway, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to implement an eco-friendly green barrier project starting August in Uchila, Udupi.

The pilot project, led by NHAI project director Abdulla Javed Azmi, will replace traditional steel guard rails with dense hedge rows. These natural barriers are designed to deter unsafe pedestrian crossings while enhancing greenery along the highway. For better coverage, plant spacing will be reduced, and dual rows featuring hedge plants for safety and flowering species for aesthetics will be introduced.

In addition to the green barriers, NHAI has shifted to solar-powered operations at all three toll plazasTalapady, Hejamady, and Sasthan. These grid-connected solar systems, launched eight months ago, have significantly cut operational costs and also support EV charging stations.

Further, under the ‘Rajmarg Saathi’ initiative, electric patrol vehicles were deployed near Hejamady toll plaza. These EVs, converted from conventional units, now monitor NH-66 from Kundapur to Talapady, conducting 4–6 rounds daily for better highway safety and response.

On World Environment Day, NHAI joined the ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’ campaign, participating in a nationwide tree plantation drive. Multiple green initiatives are currently awaiting official clearance.

Additionally, NHAI is easing city traffic by enabling free left turns at Nanthoor Junction in Mangaluru.
