The Scheduled Castes/Tribes grievances meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioners of Police Siddarth Goel and B.P. Dinesh Kumar on Sunday brought attention to several pressing urban issues in Mangaluru.

Residents raised concerns about the Urwa Store area, where a daily gathering of construction workers disrupts pedestrian and vehicular movement. Sadashiva Urva Store noted that workers often litter the area and leave construction vehicles and equipment parked, further inconveniencing the public. DCP (Crime and Traffic) Dinesh Kumar assured attendees that contractors would be summoned and instructed to arrange alternative spaces for such assemblies.

Another issue raised was the need for CCTV cameras in Dalit colonies. Anil Kankanady emphasized the importance of surveillance to prevent youth from indulging in vices. He criticized the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for focusing its efforts on the city’s outskirts while neglecting central areas. The DCP promised to notify the MCC about this concern.

Traffic chaos near schools was also highlighted. S.P. Anand pointed out how institutions like St. Gerosa School in Valencia do not allow vehicles inside, leading to congestion on Fr. Muller Road. Bethany School, however, tackled a similar issue by altering school timings. The police acknowledged the problem, noting that safety concerns often prompt institutions to restrict vehicle entry. Ongoing discussions with school managements aim to resolve these issues.

Assistant Commissioners of Police Najma Farooqi, K. Srikanth, Ravish S. Nayak, Dhanya Nayak, and other officials participated in the meeting.
