Mangaluru: The Sri Ambamaheshwari Seva Trust has taken a proactive approach in maintaining cleanliness around Gujjarakere Lake by deploying dedicated staff for regular upkeep.
Under its Namma Uru, Namma Hemme, Namma Parisara, Namma Javabdari (Our City, Our Pride, Our Environment, Our Responsibility) initiative, the trust launched a model ward project in three wards under Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) in 2023, ensuring lake maintenance and environmental conservation.
General Secretary Umanath Kotekar highlighted the trust’s efforts in preserving trees planted around the lake, engaging three permanent staff and five temporary workers. He noted that compared to Kavoor Kere, also developed under the Smart City Project, Gujjarakere’s upkeep was better due to daily cleaning, waste disposal, and regular maintenance.
To ensure consistent care, the trust shifted its monthly Shramadana program to Gujjarakere, appointing a worker to sweep, water plants, and clean designated areas daily. Volunteers also remove 7-8 bags of garbage from the lake every month.
Seeking long-term sustainability, the trust has submitted a request to MCC for official authorisation to maintain the lake and aims to expand waste management projects. Future plans include traffic improvements near Rathabeedi and better waste segregation strategies to reduce pressure on landfills.
