Health Dept Gears Up Against Bird Flu, Heatwave & Monkey Fever
With bird flu cases emerging in Ballari and Chikkaballapur, the Health & Family Welfare Department is collaborating with Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Sciences to prevent its spread. A joint coordination committee meeting will be held on Saturday in Dakshina Kannada to outline preventive strategies, confirmed DHO Dr. H.R. Thimmaiah.
He advised meat consumers to ensure thorough cooking to eliminate risks. Instructions have already been sent to taluk-level officials for precautionary measures. While no cases have been reported in the district, authorities are on high alert.
Heatwave Advisory
Rising temperatures pose health risks, especially for children. A special meeting with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and IMA is being considered to address these concerns. Schools have been directed to raise awareness among parents. The public is advised to consume hydrating fruits & vegetables and avoid sugary cold beverages, which can worsen dehydration.
Monkey Fever Alert
Though Dakshina Kannada has not reported monkey fever cases in the past 10 years, patients from Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, and Udupi are seeking treatment in the district. Wenlock District Hospital offers specialized care, while Shivamogga Lab handles sample testing, which takes 1-2 days for results, stated Dr. Naveen Chandra Kulal.
