In an extraordinary act of compassion, the family of 23-year-old Gloria Asha Rodrigues, from Bajpe, Mangaluru, chose to turn their profound sorrow into a beacon of hope for others through organ donation after she was declared brain dead. Gloria, daughter of Gration Alex and Gretta Flavia Rodrigues, had recently completed her MCom from St. Aloysius College and begun working there in July 2024.
On November 8, Gloria experienced a severe anaphylactic reaction and was immediately taken to Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH). Despite exhaustive resuscitation efforts by Dr. Roshan M and the ICU team, her condition remained dire, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of brain death.
After a moving family discussion, led by Gloria’s brother, they decided to honor her memory by donating her organs. Through the Karnataka organ donation network, her organs found new homes, transforming lives across the region. Her lungs were sent to BGS Global Hospitals in Chennai, her heart to Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bengaluru, her liver to AJ Hospital in Mangaluru, while her kidneys, corneas, and skin were donated to recipients at KMC Manipal and the Father Muller Skin Bank.
An emotional “Honor Walk” was held as Gloria was escorted by her family and hospital staff to the OT complex for the organ retrieval. Gloria’s legacy of kindness and bravery continues, bringing hope to many in need.
