
Heatwave Alert Issued for Coastal Karnataka: IMD Warns of Rising Temperatures
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the coastal regions of Karnataka, including Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada districts, as temperatures are expected to rise significantly over the next few days. The warning highlights the possibility of hot and humid conditions on February 26 and 27.
Current Heatwave Conditions
Coastal Karnataka, typically experiencing cooler weather in February, has seen a sharp rise in temperatures in recent days. Although mornings are foggy and skies are cloudy, afternoons are scorching with intense sunlight. On February 25, Karwar recorded a high of 37.6°C, and Panambur, Mangaluru, reached 37.2°C, which is 3.8°C above normal. Temperatures are predicted to increase further, with Panambur potentially hitting 38.7°C in the coming days.
What is a Heatwave?
A heatwave is defined as a period of excessively hot weather, typically 4-5°C above the normal temperature. The current rise in temperatures in coastal Karnataka is already 3°C above average, prompting the heatwave warning.
IMD’s Yellow Alert
The yellow alert warns residents of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada of hot and humid conditions on the mentioned dates. Authorities have advised people to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat.
Precautions During Heatwave:
- Stay in cool places as much as possible.
- Use umbrellas when stepping out in the sun.
- Wear lightweight cotton clothing.
- Use cotton hats or caps.
- Rest during peak sunlight hours (10 AM to 4 PM).
- Drink plenty of water and buttermilk.
- Keep living spaces cool (use fans or AC).
- Move heat-affected individuals to a cooler environment immediately.
- Provide medical attention to those affected by heatstroke.
Actions to Avoid:
- Avoid direct exposure to sunlight or heatwaves.
- Do not go outside without an umbrella during peak heat hours.
- Avoid tight, dark-colored, or synthetic clothing.
- Do not expose your head directly to the sun.
- Refrain from strenuous physical activities during the heat of the day.
- Avoid drinking hot tea or alcohol.
- Ensure no direct sunlight enters your living spaces.
- Do not delay providing first aid to heat-affected individuals.
