Heavy Rains Delay School Reopening in Coastal Karnataka
Mangaluru: Due to persistent heavy rainfall across the coastal belt, the district administrations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have announced a one-day holiday for anganwadis, primary, and high schools on May 30.
This decision comes as a precautionary measure, considering the safety of children and staff amid continuous downpours and weather alerts issued by authorities.
Notably, government schools across Karnataka were originally scheduled to reopen on May 30, marking the end of the summer vacation. However, the weather conditions forced a postponement of reopening in these two coastal districts.
Parents welcomed the announcement, citing concerns over waterlogged roads, poor visibility, and unsafe travel conditions for school-going children. Several low-lying areas in Mangaluru and surrounding regions have reported flooding and traffic disruptions since Thursday night.
Officials from both districts are monitoring the situation closely. The reopening of schools will depend on further weather updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has predicted more rainfall in the coming days.
Educational institutions have been advised to remain alert for fresh instructions, and updates will be issued accordingly.
This proactive step aims to prioritize student safety while ensuring minimal disruption to the academic calendar.
