Mangaluru – Relentless rainfall over the past several days has led to extensive flooding and severe property damage across Mangaluru, with the worst impact reported from the Kannur area.
In a tragic incident, a landslide caused by the heavy downpour completely destroyed five houses located at the base of a hillside in Dayambu Gudde, Kannur. The affected families — including those of Hameed Ustad, Maimuna, Saadiq, and Shenaaz — are now homeless and in distress.
Recounting the terrifying moment, resident Saadiq said, “Around 3 am, the hill behind our houses collapsed under the pressure of continuous rain. Without proper drainage, the water kept collecting. We tried to dig channels to divert it, but the rainfall was so intense that the hill gave way.”
Local representatives, including Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath and former Kannur ward corporator Chandravathi, visited the site to evaluate the damage and offer support.
MLA Kamath expressed concern over the poor infrastructure in the area, noting that over 100 nearby homes—especially those close to the railway track—lack proper road connectivity. “This poses serious problems during medical emergencies. Carrying patients by foot is unacceptable,” he said.
Kamath announced a ₹3 crore allocation from the minority welfare fund to improve infrastructure, including the construction of motorable roads. He also revealed plans for a new underpass to improve access, with discussions already underway with Minister V Somanna and the railway department to secure approvals for the road project.
