The women’s police in Mangaluru have arrested a man from Hejamadi for allegedly deceiving a woman and defrauding her of Rs 1 lakh by convincing her that she required special treatment due to the influence of black magic.
The accused has been identified as G Abdul Kareem, alias Kuloor Ustad, a resident of Guruvayanakere. According to the police, Abdul Kareem had repeatedly contacted the woman, claiming to offer treatment for black magic. The woman, along with her sister, visited him several times, during which he would recite verses from the Quran.
On February 10, 2022, when the victim’s sister was unavailable, the woman visited Abdul Kareem’s house in Hejamadi alone. It was during this visit that Abdul Kareem allegedly took money from her, claiming that the treatment required large sums of money. Over several visits, the woman was reportedly persuaded to pay a total of Rs 1 lakh for the treatment.
Authorities have also discovered that Abdul Kareem has used similar tactics to convince others of the need for costly treatments, taking advantage of his victims’ concerns.
Inspector Balakrishna Nayak of the Mangaluru women’s police station has registered the case and is leading the ongoing investigation.
