Mangaluru— A protest held by Ulama Coordination Karnataka against the Waqf Amendment Act-2025 turned tense on Friday after a few demonstrators allegedly blocked National Highway-73 at Adyar, Kannur. The Kankanady Town police have now filed a case against three individuals in connection with the disturbance.

City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal confirmed that the protest had initially remained calm, with officers deployed to ensure law and traffic discipline. Volunteers from the organizing group also assisted in crowd management and coordination efforts.

Tensions escalated around 4:30 p.m. when a faction of protestors reportedly entered the highway, bringing traffic to a standstill. Despite continuous warnings and requests from the police to vacate the road, the group refused to comply, obstructing not only regular traffic but also emergency vehicles.

“Certain participants ignored lawful instructions, disrupted essential services, and interfered with officials on duty,” Agrawal stated. Based on surveillance footage and on-the-ground reports, the police have identified three suspects: Jaleel from Krishnapura, Fazal from Valachil, and Mohammed Hanif Noufal.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against them under various clauses of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 189(2), 126(2), 270, 324(4), 132, 285, and 190. Authorities are reviewing video evidence to pinpoint others involved.

Officials emphasized the need for maintaining public order and adhering to legal boundaries during demonstrations to prevent such disruptions in the future.
