Himanshu Thapliyal, a 2023 graduate of the MTech Nanotechnology program from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, achieved an impressive all-India rank (AIR) of 1 in the UPSC Engineering Services Examination. Originally from Uttarakhand and raised in Lucknow, Himanshu’s academic journey began with a JEE rank of 5,83,000. His relentless dedication and perseverance led him to this remarkable achievement.

He completed his BTech in electronics and communication from NPSEI, Pithoragarh, and later cracked the GATE exam to pursue his MTech in Nanotechnology at NITK (2021-2023). Himanshu expressed his desire to join the Indian Telecom Services, stating, “With this rank, my dream is now within reach. My next step is to learn about the system and identify its limits to contribute effectively to society.”

Looking back on his journey, Himanshu reflected, “Choosing NITK was key to my growth. It provided exposure, diverse peers, and shaped my decision-making. I’m grateful to have picked the right college at the right time.”

He also shared valuable advice with UPSC aspirants: “Make the most of your time at NITK—balance your academics with UPSC preparation, enjoy events, and maintain discipline.” Himanshu thanked his parents, teachers, and friends, with special mention to Prof. S. Anandhan and Prof. B. Ravi for their constant support.
