The tradition of hosting iftar gatherings during Ramadan has become increasingly popular, particularly among educational institutions and businesses in the coastal region. This year, a group of friends in Mangaluru took a remarkable step toward social inclusion by organizing a special iftar event for members of the Koraga community, promoting the values of equality and social cohesion.
The event, named Iftar for Harmony 2025, was organized by the Al Qaswa Friends Mangaluru group, which has long been committed to social welfare and helping the underprivileged. Nazeer Kudroli, president of Al Qaswa Friends, explained that the gathering brought together members of the tribal community and Muslims to share a meal, fostering a spirit of unity and inclusiveness. “Fasting during Ramadan is a deeply religious practice for Muslims, but we want to ensure that people from all walks of life come together to strengthen social harmony,” he said.
Imthiyaz BK, another organizer, noted that while many institutions and organizations host iftar events, they often exclude the underprivileged sections of society. “Our goal was to invite everyone—especially those who might not get such invitations—to join in this iftar, where free food is offered to all,” he added. The initiative also plans to invite members of the Malekudiya community to future iftar events, further promoting inclusivity.
Since the first day of Ramadan, the Al Qaswa Friends group has been serving free food for iftar at the cooperative building premises on Bunder Road, attracting an average of 500 participants daily. People working in nearby markets, migrant laborers, and hospital patients and their families have been benefiting from this charitable effort.
Through such initiatives, the group hopes to foster a greater sense of community and inclusivity during the holy month of Ramadan, demonstrating that the spirit of giving and unity transcends all social boundaries.
