Mangaluru: Cracking down on illegal sand mining, the Mangaluru tahsildar led a raid near Thiruvail and Kandavara villages, uncovering unauthorized extraction along the Phalguni River. Some families had even built roads and installed gates to facilitate illegal transportation. Several boats and stockpiled sand were seized during the operation.

Land Seized, Fines Levied

Following the raid, the tahsildar submitted a report to the assistant commissioner (AC) on March 12, leading to strict action:

  • Subbanna Shetty & Sumathi Shetty (Doninjaguttu, Muloor) – 5 cents seized, ₹5 lakh fine.

  • Prema B Shetty (Thiruvailu village) – 27 cents seized, ₹10 lakh fine.

  • Annappa Shetty – 55 cents seized, ₹15 lakh fine.

  • K Manjappa Shetty – 12 cents seized, ₹5 lakh fine.

  • The offenders have been ordered to halt illegal mining and submit written compliance. Failure to do so will result in land confiscation under Green Tribunal guidelines.

    Deadline for Appeals

    Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan stated that objections to the penalties can be filed before April 7, 2025.
