Mangaluru: The operations at the Kudroli slaughterhouse were halted four years ago due to an order from the National Green Tribunal (NGT). However, it has come to light that illegal slaughterhouse activities have been taking place on adjacent private land, where cows, goats, and sheep are being slaughtered on a daily basis.

In response to public complaints, Mayor Manoj Kumar conducted an unannounced inspection on Friday. Along with Deputy Mayor Bhanumathi PS, town planning chairperson Veena Mangala, health standing committee head Sumithra Kariya, and other corporators, the mayor led the inspection team. While there were no visible signs of animal slaughter at the front of the old slaughterhouse, a closer inspection of a nearby building on private land revealed shocking evidence.

Inside the building, piles of animal heads and body parts from goats, sheep, and cattle were discovered, causing a strong stench and attracting swarms of flies. The mayor and Corporator Manohar Shetty had to break the lock of the building to access the room, where they found hooks for hanging meat, weighing scales, and designated slaughter areas.

The mayor expressed his anger, questioning why health officials were unaware of such illegal activities in the heart of the city and demanding immediate action. Five illegal structures were also found nearby, and the mayor instructed officials to demolish them immediately.

The new building for the Kudroli slaughterhouse is being constructed following NGT guidelines to treat waste water before releasing it into drains.
