Mangaluru, Karnataka: The Department of Posts on Monday unveiled a commemorative postal stamp to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association (DKWJA). The event was held at the Press Club premises in Mangaluru, drawing local media professionals and dignitaries.

Senior Superintendent of Posts (Mangaluru Division), Sudhakar Mallya, officiated the release ceremony. He highlighted that India Post has a longstanding tradition of documenting historical milestones and achievements through commemorative stamps, which showcase India’s heritage, culture, and notable events to a global audience.

Significance of the stamp

The commemorative stamp marks 50 years of service by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association, an organisation representing local journalists and promoting press welfare in the region. Over the decades, the association has been pivotal in championing the rights of working journalists, ensuring professional development, and advocating for ethical standards in journalism.

The stamp serves as both a tribute to the association’s contributions and a reflection of the enduring importance of a free and independent press in India.

India Post initiatives

Speaking at the event, Sudhakar Mallya also highlighted India Post’s ongoing citizen-centric initiatives, which extend beyond postal services. The department now offers a range of services, including:

  • Accident and health insurance schemes for citizens

  • Expansion of postal services to reach rural and urban areas alike

  • He emphasised that these efforts aim to bring essential services closer to the people while continuing to celebrate India’s heritage and cultural milestones.
