The Surfing Federation of India (SFI) has officially announced the much-anticipated fifth edition of the Indian Open of Surfing (IOS), scheduled to take place at Sasihithlu Beach, Mangalore, from May 31 to June 2, 2024. This event holds significant importance in the surfing calendar as it serves as the second stop in the National Championship series for 2024. Supported by the Karnataka Government for the fifth consecutive year, the Indian Open of Surfing promises to showcase the top talents in Indian surfing.
Format and Participants The competition will feature four categories: Men’s Open, Women’s Open, and separate Groms (U-16) categories for boys and girls, providing a broad platform for national surfers to compete. Following the International Surfing Festival Kerala 2024, the IOS is a crucial battleground for surfers aiming for top positions in the national standings.
Enthusiasm and Expectations Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, Mullai Muhilan MP, IAS, expressed enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing its role in promoting Karnataka’s coasts and boosting tourism. Arun Vasu, President of the SFI, highlighted the event’s significance in India’s surfing aspirations, expressing optimism for the upcoming competition in Mangalore.
Top Attractions Surfers to watch include Ramesh Budihal, Harish M, Srikanth D, and Manikandan M in the men’s category, along with Kamali Moorthy, Srishthi Selvam, and Sandhya Arun in the women’s category. The teenage sensation, Kishore Kumar, is also expected to draw attention following his impressive performances.
Anticipated Competition Rammohan Paranjape, Vice President of SFI and Director of Mantra Surf Club, anticipates a competitive event with a strong turnout of India’s top surfers. Previous IOS editions have seen close finishes, enhancing excitement for this year’s competition.
