Jail Launches Inmate-Run Nursery for Rehabilitation and Green Innovation
Mangaluru, Aug 21 (PTI): The Mangaluru district jail has launched a unique nursery, blending inmate rehabilitation with environmental stewardship. Officially opened on Tuesday by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mullai Mugilan, the nursery offers a variety of saplings grown by inmates for sale.
DC Mugilan was inspired to create this initiative after a visit to the jail months ago, where he noticed the flourishing greenery within the prison grounds, meticulously cared for by the inmates. Recognizing the potential for these efforts to contribute to society, he facilitated the establishment of a plant sales center at the jail’s entrance.
The nursery is a collaborative effort involving the Municipal Corporation and the Forest Department, aiming to provide inmates with meaningful, productive activities. At the inauguration, DC Mugilan emphasized that the sales center is a step forward in encouraging inmate rehabilitation and transformation.
One inmate involved in the nursery’s development expressed that the project symbolizes growth and the opportunity for a second chance, even within the confines of prison.
Principal District and Sessions Judge Ravindra M Joshi presided over the event, praising the initiative as a model for prisoner rehabilitation. The event was also attended by District Jail Superintendent B T Oblesappa and District Legal Service Authority Member Secretary Shobha B G.
