Mangaluru: The much-anticipated Jappu Mahakalipadpu Railway Underpass, a key component of the Mangaluru Smart City project, has faced significant delays. Initially launched in December 2022, the underpass was expected to be completed within a year. However, unforeseen geological challenges—particularly rock formations underground—have stalled progress.
Although initial efforts were fast-tracked to reopen the road ahead of the monsoon season, the appearance of rocky terrain has hindered the construction. Presently, the sewerage and stormwater drainage system is under active development, and road construction is underway. The single-lane stretch on Jappinamogaru National Highway is reportedly complete.
Despite nearing the third year, the underpass is yet to be operational. In the meantime, train traffic in the area has slowed due to the complex nature of the construction. Local vehicular movement has been restricted for years, with only a narrow path available for two-wheelers. A dangerous pothole on this route, particularly near a bend, poses serious risks, especially during peak hours.
Additionally, traffic congestion is worsening, exacerbated by the narrow road and level crossing gates, which regularly halt flow. The Rs 30.7 crore budget allocated for the project has been fully paid by Smart City to the Railway Department, which is overseeing tendering and execution. Out of this, Rs 20 crore is earmarked for the underpass, while the rest will fund connecting roads.
Smart City has completed four-lane concrete roads on either side of the underpass. The public awaits timely completion.
