A joint operation led by the health department and local police has successfully cracked down on public smoking violations in Mangaluru, resulting in 51 cases and fines being levied on offenders.
The crackdown took place in key areas such as Falnir, Attavar, Hampankatta, and near the Regional Transport Office (R.T.O.). Penalties of up to Rs. 200 were imposed on individuals caught smoking in public spaces, including hotels, cafes, tea stalls, and retail shops.
In accordance with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), the operation also targeted the illegal sale of tobacco products. Shops selling individual cigarettes, rather than full packs, were fined. Furthermore, establishments within a 100-meter radius of educational institutions found selling tobacco products were penalized.
Authorities have announced plans to escalate enforcement efforts, with repeat offenders facing harsher consequences, including the potential revocation of their trading licenses by the municipal corporation.
For those wishing to quit smoking, the district’s Wenlock Hospital offers a tobacco cessation center, providing support and resources to help individuals break free from tobacco use.
This operation was led by District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. Timmayya H.R. and District Surveillance Officer Dr. Naveen Chandra Kulal, with support from the district tobacco control team and local police from the Pandeshwar station. The initiative underscores a strong commitment to public health and adherence to tobacco control regulations.
