“Journalists play a pivotal role in shaping society,” said M Mohan Alva, president of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri. He was addressing the fifth district conference of the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists’ Association at Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall on Thursday.
Alva highlighted the media’s significant contributions to social reform, democracy, and the empowerment of marginalized groups. “By consistently providing information and fostering awareness, the media supports society’s progress,” he stated.
Expressing concern over the state of social media, he remarked that it often undermines moral values. He emphasized the need for youth to uphold journalism’s sanctity, cultivate social values, and contribute to societal strengthening.
Alva also pointed out the decline in investigative journalism, stating, “A lack of research in media is evident, and the trend of simplistic reporting must evolve. Journalism should embrace deeper analysis and comprehensiveness to better serve society.”
The conference served as a platform to reflect on the media’s evolving role and the importance of ethical, informed journalism in today’s fast-paced digital era.
