Mangaluru: In a landmark achievement for advanced cancer care, K S Hegde Hospital has successfully completed three highly complex Carinal Resection Surgeries, a procedure rarely performed due to its technical difficulty and high-risk nature. This reinforces the hospital’s reputation as a centre of excellence in thoracic oncology.
All three patients were suffering from severe breathing issues caused by cancer at the carina—the vital point where the windpipe (trachea) splits into the bronchi leading to both lungs. Carinal resection involves removing this section and reconstructing the airway, demanding exceptional surgical skill and precise anaesthesia management.
“These surgeries are among the toughest in thoracic oncology,” noted Dr Vinay Kumar Rajendra, the surgical oncologist who led the procedures. “To complete three successfully in a short span reflects our team’s dedication and multidisciplinary strength.”
Dr Sripada G Mehandale, who led the anaesthesia team, highlighted the rarity of such procedures and praised the hospital’s robust infrastructure and teamwork. Interventional pulmonologist Dr Giridhar B H added that this accomplishment underlines the hospital’s commitment to world-class treatment and real hope for patients.
All three patients recovered without complications, and are now cancer-free. One remarkable case involved a 14-year-old boy who returned home healthy and even appeared for his 10th board exam just a week after surgery.
Dr Sumalatha R Shetty emphasized the collaborative effort and clinical excellence required for these surgeries. Dr Sandeep Rai, Dean of KSHEMA, congratulated the team and called the achievement a proud milestone in the institution’s journey.
