The DKZP Higher Primary School in Punchapady, Kadaba taluk, has undertaken a unique initiative to celebrate its upcoming centenary. With 97 years of history, the school aims to plant 751 areca saplings on two acres of its campus, transforming unused land into a sustainable source of income.
The school, situated 50 km from Mangaluru, allocated two out of its four acres of land for the plantation. Headmistress Rashmitha N shared that the idea emerged during discussions on making the centenary memorable. “We sought support from alumni, parents, and locals for this green initiative, encouraging donations for each sapling,” she said.
The land, lying idle for years, was recently cleared and leveled for planting. With contributions of Rs 3 lakh, half of which came through donations, the planting was completed four days ago. Locals who couldn’t donate financially provided physical assistance.
Guided by alumni association president PD Krishna Kumar Rai, village elder Krishna Rai P, and panchayat members, the project is supported by Savanur village panchayat, which arranged irrigation. Alumnus Harish Thotattadka is temporarily managing water supply.
Plans are underway to interplant vegetables, boosting resources for school development, including hiring guest teachers and introducing English-medium courses. “This plantation is a collective dream, and its success will benefit generations to come,” added Rashmitha.
