Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district administration, zilla panchayat and several local associations will jointly organise the annual Karavali Utsava, a major cultural, sports and entertainment festival, from December 20 to January 4. The festival, known for showcasing the rich heritage of coastal Karnataka, will feature an extensive line-up of events across various parts of the city and its beaches.
Deputy commissioner Darshan H. V., addressing a press meet, said the festival will be inaugurated on December 20 at the Karavali Utsava Grounds with a grand cultural programme in the presence of elected representatives. The inauguration is expected to draw a large gathering, setting the stage for the fortnight-long celebrations.
Cultural programmes and stalls at Utsava Grounds
Throughout the festival, various stalls, exhibitions and an amusement park will remain open to the public at the Karavali Utsava Grounds. These attractions are among the most anticipated aspects of the utsava, bringing together families, tourists and art enthusiasts.
Cultural and folk performances reflecting the diverse traditions of coastal Karnataka will take place every Saturday and Sunday. These performances are designed to celebrate the region’s artistic identity while promoting local talent.
Grand musical nights at popular beaches
A major highlight of this year’s utsava will be the “musical night” events on January 3 and 4, to be held at Panambur, Tannirbavi and Sasihithlu beaches. These concerts will feature artistes from both Sandalwood and Bollywood, drawing music lovers to the scenic coastal venues.
In addition to the main festivities, extended celebrations are planned for January and February, offering residents a continuous series of events to enjoy even after the official end of the Karavali Utsava.
Beach festival and adventure activities
The district administration has lined up several special attractions to enhance the festive experience. Heli rides will be available every Saturday and Sunday from December 20 at the Sahyadri College Grounds, offering visitors a panoramic view of Mangaluru’s landscape.
A chitra shilpa nrutya mela – kala parba will be organised along Kadri Park Road from January 9 to 11, providing a platform for artists and performers. On January 26, a fruit and flower show will be held at Kadri Park, showcasing horticultural talent from the region.
A triathlon is scheduled at Tannirbavi Beach from January 9 to 11, followed by an international kite festival on January 17 and 18. Beach festivals will take place across major beaches from January 23 to 25, bringing together sports, cultural activities and family entertainment.
Budget and revenue plans
The district administration has planned the Karavali Utsava at an estimated cost of ₹2.5 crore. Revenue of ₹30 lakh is expected through stall allotment tenders. A proposal seeking ₹1.5 crore in government support has already been submitted, with an additional ₹1 crore to be mobilised through advertisements and sponsorships from local companies.
Zilla panchayat CEO Karbhari Vinayak Narwade, additional deputy commissioner K. Raju, DCP Mithun H. N. and tourism deputy director Dileep were also present at the press meet, expressing their support for the extensive festival arrangements.
Wine, cheese and cake fest among many attractions
Adding to the festive charm, a wine, cheese and cake fest will be organised at Panambur Beach in the last week of December. A food street will come up along Kadri Park Road—or alternatively at one of the beaches—on January 30 and 31, offering diverse culinary delights.
A book fest is planned for the last week of January, to be held either at the city central library or an open public space. February will also see multiple attractions, including a film festival at Big Cinemas in the last week of the month and a dog show at Kadri Park on February 14.
