Vehicle buyers across Karnataka, including Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Mysuru, and Udupi, are struggling with prolonged delays in receiving their RC smart cards. Despite waiting for months, many remain without official registration proof, leading to fines and travel concerns.
The root of the problem lies in the expiry of a contract with Rosmerta, the firm responsible for manufacturing these cards. Though an interim extension was granted, inefficiencies in transitioning to a new system have resulted in widespread disruption. Adding to the chaos, a failed software migration last year led to data mismatches, further slowing distribution.
Several owners have received text messages claiming their cards were dispatched, yet no delivery has taken place. Many have made repeated visits to RTOs, post offices, and showrooms, only to be met with vague responses.
Authorities argue that digital versions of these documents, available on the DigiLocker platform, can serve as a temporary alternative. However, this does little to reassure vehicle owners, especially those traveling across state borders where physical documents are mandatory.
Transport officials downplay the crisis, stating that delays are localized and will be resolved at the regional level. Meanwhile, car owners continue to battle bureaucracy, left without clear answers or a definitive resolution.
As frustration mounts, motorists demand immediate intervention to streamline the process and prevent further inconvenience.
