While the recent state budget presented by CM Siddaramaiah addressed broader concerns of the coastal region, it fell short of catering to the specific needs of Coastal Karnataka, the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) stated.
KCCI president Anand G Pai acknowledged the government’s balanced approach to economic growth and fiscal responsibility but urged the introduction of focused policies to position Mangaluru as a regional economic hub. Key priorities include strengthening infrastructure, boosting industrial expansion, and enhancing tourism prospects.
He proposed that the Rs 1,800 crore ‘Brand Bengaluru’ project should be complemented by a ‘Brand Coastal Karnataka’ initiative to harness the region’s vast potential in beach tourism, cruise travel, and cultural heritage. Establishing a Water Transport Museum and Experience Centre in Mangaluru could enhance tourism, but additional investment is needed in hospitality facilities. Pai also emphasized the necessity of upgrading coastal tourism amenities in Dakshina Kannada to attract premium visitors.
On environmental concerns, he welcomed the Rs 200 crore allocation for sea erosion mitigation but urged the government to adopt preventive measures for long-term coastal sustainability.
Physician Dr. Srinivas Kakkilaya appreciated the focus on maternal health and welcomed the proposed government medical college in Puttur. However, he raised concerns over early exposure to technology and data privacy in school education initiatives.
The Canara Plastic Manufacturers & Traders Association (CPMTA) labeled the budget as largely farmer- and health-oriented, with limited provisions for MSMEs. CPMTA president B.A. Nazeer called for swift implementation of MSME Cluster Development Scheme facility centers and praised automated self-certification renewals for easing compliance burdens.
