Key NH-75 Stretches Opened in DK as Monsoon Nears, Says MP Chowta
Mangaluru: In a significant move to ease traffic congestion on the busy Bengaluru–Mangaluru route, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has opened two-lane sections of the vehicle underpasses (VUP) at Mani and Uppinangady starting Thursday. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta announced the development, adding that the left-side flyover at Kalladka Town will become operational from June 2.
Due to the early arrival of the monsoon, commuters have been facing difficulties on NH-75, particularly in areas undergoing roadworks. MP Chowta said he had raised the issue with NHAI, urging them to make critical stretches passable to ensure smooth vehicle flow during the rainy season.
Complaints have been pouring in about traffic disruptions, especially between BC Road and Addahole. In response, Chowta directed NHAI officials to promptly identify affected zones and implement alternate traffic solutions.
Although currently on an international all-party delegation visit, Chowta has remained in active communication with NHAI, stressing the urgency of minimizing travel disruption. He has also sought real-time updates on stretches impacted by heavy rains and instructed that they be handled with priority.
To mitigate waterlogging at Thumbe, NHAI has installed a pipe culvert to enhance drainage during rainfall, aiming to eliminate the issue upon full project completion.
As of now, 14.4 km of the 15.1 km four-lane stretch between Addahole and Periyashanthi has been completed, while 41.5 km of the 48.5 km stretch from Periyashanthi to Bantwal is ready. Senior NHAI engineers inspected the progress on Tuesday.
