Mangaluru: In a major milestone for cancer care in coastal Karnataka, the Department of Surgical Oncology at KMC Attavar has successfully performed a complex Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) followed by Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) for a patient diagnosed with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei, a rare and challenging peritoneal surface malignancy.
Advanced cancer surgery executed with multidisciplinary expertise
The high-precision procedure was led by Dr Dishitha Shetty, Surgical Oncologist, supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr Malini Mohan (Medical Oncology), Dr Abhishek Krishna (Radiation Oncology), and Dr Akshatha (Anaesthesiology). The coordinated efforts of surgical, anaesthesia and intensive care teams ensured safe and successful completion of the operation.
Understanding PMP and the CRS-HIPEC approach
Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) is characterised by the accumulation of mucinous tumours and gelatinous material within the abdominal cavity, typically originating from the appendix or ovary. If untreated, it leads to progressive abdominal distension and impacts overall quality of life.
Cytoreductive surgery involves removal of all visible tumour deposits from the abdomen. This is followed by HIPEC, where heated chemotherapeutic fluid is circulated within the abdomen for 60–90 minutes. The heat improves drug penetration and effectiveness, targeting microscopic cancer cells remaining after surgery.
KMC Attavar strengthens its advanced oncology capabilities
Dr Dishitha Shetty noted that CRS-HIPEC is one of the most advanced treatment modalities for select peritoneal malignancies including PMP, peritoneal mesothelioma, and certain ovarian and colorectal cancers.
“This procedure demands meticulous surgical precision, diligent intraoperative monitoring and seamless teamwork. Its success reflects KMC Attavar’s ability to perform advanced oncological surgeries on par with leading cancer centres,” she said.
A significant step forward for regional cancer care
This achievement highlights KMC Attavar’s growing prominence as a centre of excellence in comprehensive oncology. With strong capabilities in surgical, medical and radiation oncology, the institution continues to provide evidence-based, world-class cancer treatment aimed at improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
