Mangaluru – KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, has set a new benchmark in cardiac care by successfully carrying out orbital atherectomy, a cutting-edge procedure designed to treat complex and heavily calcified coronary artery blockages.

The patient, a 63-year-old man named Gokul (name changed), was brought in with a major heart attack affecting the front wall of the heart. Under the leadership of Dr Narasimha Pai, head of cardiology, and Dr Dithesh M, associate consultant, the team identified a total blockage in the left anterior descending (LAD) artery. Initial angioplasty helped restore blood flow temporarily, but a highly calcified segment posed challenges for permanent stent placement.

To overcome this, the doctors opted for orbital atherectomy, a high-tech method that uses a diamond-coated crown rotating at high speeds to gently sand away calcium deposits inside the artery. This process made the artery more flexible and allowed safe and effective stent deployment.

Dr Pai described the achievement as a “significant advancement in tackling complex coronary artery conditions,” enhancing treatment possibilities for patients with severe heart disease. Saghir Siddiqui, regional COO, commended the entire cardiac care team for embracing innovative technology and reaffirmed KMC’s role as a trusted heart care center in coastal Karnataka.

The patient responded well and is recovering steadily, marking a milestone in the hospital’s mission to offer world-class heart treatment to the region.
