Kundapur, Aug 22: Students of Bhandarkars’ College, led by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), staged a protest outside the college gate on August 21, demanding the reinstatement of previously followed college policies.

The protest was sparked by concerns over the college’s recent changes, including reduced support for extracurricular activities and stricter rules regarding student movements outside campus. Swathi Poojary, a student participant, criticized the lack of funding for extracurriculars, which previously had college support, and argued that reinstating this support would boost student engagement and talent.

NSUI president Sujan Shetty expressed frustration over the college administration’s failure to revert to the old rules despite past protests. He warned that a larger protest would be organized if the administration did not address their concerns.

The new rules, which include restrictions on student movement outside the campus in response to parental complaints, have caused significant issues for students, particularly those from rural areas. Many students face difficulties such as arriving late due to agricultural work or inadequate bus facilities, which the previous policies had accommodated.

Principal Shubhakar Achari assured the students that their demands would be forwarded to the college management for consideration. The protest saw broad participation from the student body and was supported by NSUI leaders including Syed Farzan, Swastik Shetty, Vivek, Sumukh Sheregar, and Syed Adnan. The police were on hand to ensure security during the demonstration.
