Mangaluru, March 22, 2025 – The Department of Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy at Father Muller Medical College (FMMC), in collaboration with the Karavali Dermatology Society, hosted the book release of Heroes & Heroines of 20th Century Leprosy Work in India on March 22, 2025, at the Decennial Memorial Hall, Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI), Kankanady.

A Tribute to Leprosy Pioneers

The book, authored by Dr. Derek A. Lobo and Dr. Mohan D. Gupte, chronicles the contributions of 45 individuals and 16 institutions dedicated to leprosy eradication in India. Among them is Fr. Augustus Muller, the founder of FMCI, who established St. Joseph Leprosy Hospital in 1890.

The event was presided over by Rev. Fr. Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director of FMCI, and attended by Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo, Director-Designate of FMCI, along with Mr. Gaurab Sen, CEO of Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation, New Delhi.

Honouring Dr. Derek Lobo’s Contributions

Dr. Derek Lobo, a veteran in leprosy and public health, was felicitated for his 55 years of service in disease elimination efforts with WHO, Emmaus-Switzerland, and the German TB/Leprosy Association. He has also received accolades like the Eminent Aloysian Award and the RACHANA Award (2008).

During his address, Dr. Lobo raised a critical question:
“Why does India account for 60% of global leprosy cases, while 121 other countries share the remaining 40%?” He called for continued efforts in leprosy and tuberculosis eradication.
