Mangaluru: In a major step towards boosting early childhood education, LKG and UKG classes are set to be introduced in 110 Anganwadi centres across coastal Karnataka. The move aims to offer a strong foundation in English and pre-primary education to children in rural areas.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Women and Child Welfare, will include 70 Anganwadis in Dakshina Kannada and 40 in Udupi district. Though official government orders are still awaited, classes are expected to begin from August 2, according to sources.
Pre-Primary in Anganwadis — Not Schools
Initially, the education department had proposed launching pre-primary sections within government schools. However, the idea drew opposition from Anganwadi workers and helper associations, who feared closure of existing centres. Responding to the concerns, the government decided to start LKG/UKG classes within the Anganwadis themselves.
Staff Training & Free Resources
Shaila K Karigi, Mangaluru Rural Child Development Project Officer, confirmed that Anganwadi staff will receive phased training to effectively deliver lessons. Additionally, the government will provide free textbooks, learning materials, and mid-day meals to students.
“We’ve identified centres with adequate facilities and provided them with smart TVs and learning kits,” said Usman, Deputy Director of the Women and Child Development Department, Dakshina Kannada. “Once formal directions are received, the classes will begin without delay.”
This development promises to upgrade rural early education and improve learning outcomes for children in government-supported centres.
